You’re sitting on the edge of the bathtub, holding a pregnancy test with two lines on it.
And you’re waiting to feel the thing you’re supposed to feel:
- The rush
- The happy tears
- The moment you’ve pictured a hundred times
But maybe it hasn’t come (yet).
Maybe you feel a wave of panic instead. And a quiet voice in the back of your head going, oh God. What happens now?
If that’s you right now, don’t worry – I’ve felt the exact same way.
Despite wanting children for years, I still didn’t beam with happiness the moment I found out it was real. (More on that later.)
However you’re feeling right now: thrilled, terrified, or completely numb – it’s allowed!
And you don’t have to tell a single soul until you’re ready.
In this post I’m going to walk you through 27 unique ways to announce your pregnancy:
- to your partner
- your parents
- your other kids
- your closest friends
- and your boss
- and how to announce it quietly
I’ve also included photoshoot ideas you can do at home.
If this is your pregnancy, I also suggest you read my post First pregnancy guide: everything you need to know as a first time mum.
Ok, my darling, are you ready?
Let’s go.
Before You Tell Anyone: Give Yourself a Minute
When I found out I was pregnant with my twins, I had the whole scene planned in my head:
I’d walk out of the bathroom, hand my husband the test, and we’d fall into each other’s arms crying happy tears.
Well, let me tell you that’s not what happened!
In reality, I sat in the bathroom staring at the test, feeling mildly stressed and panicked.
But it wasn’t just a dream anymore, it was real. And it wasn’t magical at all. My brain immediately went to everything in my life that was about to change – social life, money, work, all of it.
My mind went 1000 miles per hour.
I walked out of the bathroom to my husband, who was in the living room, trying to arrange my face to look happy.
And judging by his expression when he saw me, I didn’t do a very good job.
So I just held out the test and waited. His reaction was pretty much the same as mine.
Even though we both wanted and planned this pregnancy, we didn’t expect it to happen at first try. So it was still a huge shock.
It wasn’t a bad moment, it was just a real honest one – and after speaking to other mums over the years, I also know a very common one.
With my third son, I did it completely differently. When I found out, I didn’t tell my husband right away. I gave myself some time to process it.
And then I wrapped the positive test up like a little gift and handed it to my husband.
So my honest advice, before you pick any of the ideas below: process it first, announce it second.
But of course, different things work for different women. Maybe you will want to run straight out of that bathroom, and maybe you want to do the test with your husband or friend present. That’s totally fine, of course!
But from my own experience, and from what so many other mums have told me – it’s a lot easier to enjoy it when you’re not still in shock yourself.
If you’re feeling guilty because you haven’t felt connected to the baby yet, please hear this:
Shock is NOT the same as not loving your baby.
Fear about money and change and your own dreams is NOT the same as regret.
I felt every single one of those things when I was staring at the positive test in disbelief. And I have never once loved my children any less for it.
Okay – now let’s get to the good stuff.
Unique Ways to Tell Your Partner You’re Pregnant
1. Wrap the test up as a present
This is the one I did with my third and I’d do it again every time. 🙂 Put the test in a little box and wrap it up in a gift paper or gift box. Hand it over without saying anything and watch their reaction.
2. Change their lock screen to the scan photo
They find it at 11am in the middle of a meeting.
3. Set an extra place at dinner
Cook something nice, lay the table for three and say nothing.
4. Put it in their phone
Add an event to your shared calendar for nine months’ time called “we’re going to need a bigger car.” Or leave a note on the fridge!
5. A DIY scratch card
Write your message on card, cover the words with clear tape, and then paint over them with silver acrylic mixed with a squeeze of washing-up liquid (dish soap). Give it two coats, let it dry for fifteen minutes, then hand it over with a coin.
Pregnancy Announcement Ideas for Your Parents
6. The grandparent gift box
Get a:
- “Promoted to Grandma” bib
- “Future grandma/grandpa” mug
- A pair of baby shoes
- or anything else – you can be as creative as you like!
Wrap it up and hand it over on any ordinary day.
7. Framed photo
Put your scan picture in a frame and hand it to them as a gift.
8. Ask them for a favour instead of telling them
For instance, “Could you get my old crib down from the loft?” The ask is the announcement.
9. The video call reveal
If your parents are far away, don’t wait for a visit that’s six weeks off just to do it “properly.”
Hold the scan photo up to the camera. That’s it!
How to Tell Your Older Kids You’re Pregnant
10. The big brother or big sister shirt
Give it to them as a gift and let them read it themselves if they’re old enough. If they’re little, put it on them and ask them if they know what it means.
11. Ask them what they think is in your tummy
Tell them there’s something in your tummy and let them guess what it is!
12. A book
There are lovely picture books about becoming a big brother or sister. Read it with them and tell them why you’re reading it when the moment feels right.
13. Ask them to help you choose a name
Don’t tell them anything, just ask the question and let them catch up. If they need help, you can say something along the lines of: “Would you like this name for your little brother or sister?”
But please note: don’t expect a big reaction from your other children. They will likely shrug and ask what’s for dinner. Some are upset, and that’s normal too!
Telling Your Closest Friends
14. Order a mocktail and wait
This is what I did without knowing I was doing it. I would order a non alcoholic beer, and my friends just knew in that moment. So if you normally like a drink, order something soft and just watch as it clicks. It’s real fun!
15. Send a picture
Send them a:
- scan photo
- a photo with your partner holding baby shoes
- a photo of your other kids holding the scan photo
- or a photo of your positive test next to your morning cup of tea
And say nothing else in the text.
16. Ask the group chat for a midwife recommendation
Then watch the chat lose its mind!
How to Tell Your Boss You’re Pregnant
This one isn’t really about being cute, it’s about protecting yourself:
17. Tell your manager before anyone else in the building
Managers do not like finding out secondhand, and you want this relationship on your side for the next nine months.
18. Put it in writing the same day
Have the conversation with your employer face to face, then follow up with a short email confirming what you discussed and your rough due date. Not because you’re expecting trouble, but because a paper trail is just sensible.
19. Say what you need, not how you feel
Many mums feel like they should apologise for being pregnant. I am guilty of that too! But you really have nothing to feel guilty about. You don’t need to apologise for the timing or morning sickness. Simply say, “I’m pregnant, my due date is around [month], and I’ll come back to you about leave once I’ve had my next appointment.” You don’t owe anyone any explanation.
I share more tips for working mums in this post.
Baby Announcement Photoshoot Ideas You Can Do at Home
I know the idea of having professional photos is lovely, but trust me, you really don’t need a professional photographer, and you shouldn’t feel sad if you can’t afford one.
Here are a few tips on how you can make your professional-looking pictures at home!
20. The flat lay on your bed
Get a white duvet and place an ultrasound photo, tiny shoes, or the positive test (or all of it) on top of it. Stand on the bed, shoot straight down, and use natural light from the window.
It takes five minutes and it looks amazing!!
21. The shadow shot
Stand side-on near a window in the late afternoon and photograph your baby bump shadow on the wall.
22. A letterboard or chalkboard with your due date
I know you see this one all over Instagram, but there is a reason for that. It’s simple, cute, reusable, and it does all the explaining for you.
23. Winter baby announcement photos
If you’re announcing in the colder months, use it to your advantage. You can use chunky knit sweaters, a mug of something hot, fairy lights slightly out of focus behind you, or tiny mittens on the windowsill next to the scan photo.
24. Hands only
Place your hands, your partner’s hands, and the scan photo or a pair of booties between them.
Don’t show your faces. This one is perfect if you want to announce publicly but keep yourself private.
The Quiet Ones: How to Announce Your Pregnancy Without Announcing It
Ok, but what if you don’t want everyone to know?
That’s totally fine too and here are some ways to approach it:
25. The soft launch
You tell three people, then a few weeks later, you tell three more, and then a few more after that…
There’s no post or reveal – the news just quietly spreads outward through the people who actually matter.
This might be the most underrated way to announce a pregnancy, and it’s especially kind to yourself if you’ve had a loss before, or if you’re still processing your own feelings.
26. Tell people in person, one by one, and never announce at all
You don’t need to make an announcement at all. You can tell people as you see them, and by the time the bump shows, everyone who needed to know already does.
27. Wait until the baby’s here
A private baby announcement is a lovely choice too.
You can tell your close circle and the rest can find out after the birth. Put nothing on social media for the entire nine months and let people find out when they find out.
You do not owe the internet your pregnancy! And you definitely don’t owe anyone an explanation for keeping something this big close to your chest for a while.
What If You’re Not Ready to Tell Anyone Yet?
Then don’t.
I mean it. There’s no deadline here.
The twelve-week rule isn’t a rule, it’s a habit:
- Some women tell people right away because they know they’d need support if something went wrong
- Some wait until three months when the risk of miscarriage is lower
- Some tell their mum and nobody else for months
All of that is fine!
If you’re being pushed, you have every right to say: “We’re not sharing it yet. We’ll let you know when we are.”
You don’t have to justify your decision.
Final word:
So, there you go! 27 ideas, and the only one that matters is the one that feels like you.
There is no wrong or right way to announce a pregnancy.
There’s only the way that makes you feel happy and comfortable.
Take your day or two to process it first, then tell the person(s) you most want to tell, however you want to tell them.
Remember this is about you (and your partner if you have one), no one else.
So happy announcing – or non-announcing – and if you have any questions, drop them below and I’ll answer as soon as I can.
