Twin Prams for Newborns: How to Pick the Right One (From a Mum Who’s Tried Them All)

Finding a twin pram sounds simple – until you start looking.

If you’ve already begun your search, chances are you’re feeling a little… overwhelmed.

There are SO many options out there, each with its own unique features, making it even harder to decide.

And then there are so many quesions you have that no one seems to have a clear answer for:

Should my twins sit side-by-side or one above the other?

How much storage space will I actually need?

Should I get two prams or one that grows with them?

and so many more…

As a mum of twins who went through FOUR prams before realising which is the one, I get it.

Actually, we ended up with two perfect prams: one for the newborn stage and another when they were toddlers.

So I decided to share what I learned (the hard way!) and help make your search so much easier.

But first of all, hello.

My name is Ivana, and I run MumsJourney, a blog dedicated to supporting mums through every stage of their motherhood journey. I’m also the author of Motherhood: The Unspoken and an award-winning maternal mental health advoce and mentor.

Over the years, I’ve shared advice, tips, and real-life stories from my own experience as a mum of twins and PPD survivors, helping countless mums feel heard, supported, and less alone.

Sometimes, when I really want to, I’ll create a small list of products that I’ve personally tried and found helpful: things I genuinely recommend.

In this post, I share:

  • What to look for when choosing a twin pram for newborns

  • The mistakes I made (so you don’t have to)

  • My top tips for making pram life easier from day one

  • How to pick a twin pram that grows with your twins

But first, here’s a little background story.

Choosing a Twin Pram: Why Size and Weight Are Key

As first-time parents, we were mainly focused on style and comfort when choosing a twin pram.

After what felt like endless searching, we finally bought one online from Mothercare.

First mistake: never buy a buggy online, unless you’ve seen it and tried it in person.

We chose one where the boys would sit one behind the other, thinking it would be easier to get through doors.

But when it arrived, we were shocked by how massive it was – gigantic, really. Long, like a mini bus.

Sure, we knew the measurements from the description, but until you see it in real life, you can’t truly picture it.

At the time, we lived in a flat with no lift, and I just couldn’t imagine manoeuvring that monster up and down the stairs.

We tried a few times but quickly realised that it wasn’t going to work.

So, back it went, and the search continued.

Finding the Perfect Twin Newborn Pram

Not long after, I met a fellow mum of newborn twins while out and about. And when I saw her buggy? It was love at first sight.

It was small, lightweight, and her twins looked perfectly comfortable.

The only catch? She said it was only suitable from around three months old, which put me off at first… but honestly, I loved it so much I knew I had to have it.

After our experience with the Mothercare giant, we knew size was everything.

So, I ordered the exact same buggy the moment I got home.

Practical Tips for the First Three Months

And when I tried it for the first time, I was beaming.

It was light, compact, and so easy to manoeuvre.

For the first three months, we used baby carriers and car seats instead, which worked perfectly fine since the boys were so tiny.

Once they were big enough for the buggy, they loved it, and so did we.

The only downside? It was only suitable until about two years old.

But honestly, it was well worth it.

Number one takeaway? Choose a buggy that’s PRACTICAL for you.

Lightweight. Easy to manoeuvre. Easy to fold.

Everything else comes second.

When Your Twins Outgrow the Newborn Pram

As the twins grew, it was time for a bigger buggy.

We loved our first one so much that we looked for something similar, just bigger.

But the next buggy we bought was heavy. Really heavy. Lifting it up a kerb felt like a workout.

O picked it because I saw so many twin parents using it. I figured it had to be good.

But as the boys grew, pushing it became exhausting.

Even a small hill left me panting and sweaty. (And I was pretty fit at the time!)

Manoeuvring was a nightmare. I always had to use both hands, and turning corners hurt my wrists.

Switching to a Side-by-Side Twin Pram

Naturally, I soon decided to get rid of it and start the search again.

This time, I considered a side-by-side buggy.

I felt the boys were too big to be stacked one above the other.

I also wanted something lighter.

A buggy I could push with one hand.

After a lot of research, I finally found the one: a lightweight side-by-side buggy.

It was the Out ‘n’ About and it was suitable from 0-4 years!

I couldn’t believe how light it was!

Even with two big toddlers, I could push it up hills or lift it when needed, all with one hand.

And my worry about it not fitting through doors? Completely unnecessary.

It was such a relief to finally enjoy our walks again.

And it really benefited my mental health too!

It’s something I didn’t realise earlier, but having the right buggy makes a HUGE impact on your wellbeing.

My only regret? Not getting it sooner.

They don’t make my exact model anymore, but the new version is even better! You can check it out here.

Why Convenience Is Everything with Twins

If I could go back in time, I’d get this buggy before the twins were even born.

Because when you’re caring for two babies, making life easier isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity.

With twins, every little bit of convenience counts – anything that makes life easier is well worth it.

Final Thoughts: Choosing a Twin Pram That Works for You

Choosing the right twin pram isn’t about style, it’s about finding one that works for your life.

Here’s what I learned after five prams:

  • Go practical first. Lightweight, easy to manoeuvre, and easy to fold.

  • Test before you buy. Pictures don’t show weight or how awkward a pram feels.

  • Plan for growth. What works for newborns might not work for toddlers.

I hope sharing my experience saves you time, money, and a few sore wrists.

Because once you find the right pram, every walk truly feels easier, and MUCH more enjoyable with your little duo.

With love,
Ivana xx
